I like to think, that interface is device's a-kind-of personality layer. A human side of absolute usability.
Mostly because of it, people get emotional bond with things. And this relationship can be moderated through right UX.
In general, digital products convert a visitor into satisfied user. At least on paper. Because not only the story needs to be somehow interesting, but the way it is told should be engaging, entertaining & simple.
And this is the spot where UI design shines. Here is my way how to improve user experience of your product.

I'm divided when I'm considering meaning of visual design in its IRL form. In fact, there are just few examples of neverlasting standards. Without all the rest existence is still possible.
But on other hand there is no better, faster and cheaper way to catch someone's attention in seconds of available span. With all that glitters & rewards.
